Reimagining Higher EducationMay 16, 2019
Chief Guest of the event Honorable Raja Yasir Humayun Sarfraz, Minister, Higher Education and Tourism, Punjab shared his views on “Reimagining Higher Education” at the launching ceremony of “Graduate Employability: Employers’ Perception Survey 2018-19” report by Naqeebz Consulting
Rote learning is killing the creativity in our students
I think this is very pertinent topic related to our industrial issues that we are not producing the graduates fit to industry’s qualification. A long time ago, I used to work at a tech-company in US and we used to hire graduates from around the world, I directly hired graduates from India and I used to think that we have equally qualified graduates in Pakistan. Later, my perception was shattered, when I came across the disappointing condition of our graduates. Few of them are very good and up to the mark but they are very few of them, most of them don’t have appropriate qualification for the job. The education system is not inculcating the skills in students and there is something inherently wrong with our education system, especially with schooling which is still prevalent, students are not taught to be creative and they are not imparted critical and logical thinking. They are just following the rote learning. That cramming leads to top marks and those top marks, lead to top universities. The first revamp we require is in our schooling system. There shouldn’t be any bifurcation in the education system and there shouldn’t be any disparity in imparting the education. Education should be equal to all, regardless of economic capacity of parents. Our graduates can’t produce a creative content of three to four lines. If we don’t have creativity, we can’t comprehend the text.
We need revamp in our schooling system
In our public universities, we get admission easily, but they don’t produce students at par with the private and elite universities. To change the whole education system, first we need to revive and improve our schooling system. If our schooling system would be improved, the foundation of education system would be stronger and we can build strong pillars of higher education on that. Dr.ZIQ has rightly pointed out that to produce a well-rounded graduate, we need to impart the knowledge of philosophy and history into his mind and heart. We should also devise our curriculum relevant to industry’s requirement. Knowledge parks should be established to bridge the gap between industry and academia. That’s how we uplift our education system and would revolutionize it in the coming years, Insha Allah.
Knowledge parks should be established to bridge the gap between industry and academia.
